The difference is that the airplane is still in service , so anything done to keep it flying is part of the airframes 'history' .
Many parts , engines were replaced during the wartime career of an aircraft , but the essential 'heart' of the machine was the same , and all parts used were from the same period of history . This Mes. service finished some 60 years ago and since only a cockpit and some smashed parts survive anything done to get it airworthy requires a donor fuselage , center section and all new parts .... all of which have no connection to the original aircraft or its place in history..
Don't get me wrong .. I am all for it being rebuilt to represent what it once was ,if it was left as is now there is little of historical value anyway.. in its present form it is a pile of scrap !
It will be fantastic to see it fly ...all I am saying is I hope no attempt is made to disguise its pedigree for future generations.
The 109 seems to have a problem in this area , mainly due to the Buchon and the adding of a DB605 . Does an engine change make a Spanish Ha 1112 Buchon built in the fifties , into a German Me109 ??
How many Buchon owners insist that 'their Buchon ' is actually one of the 'original' 25 109s shippped to Spain in 43 ? Quite a few from what I have read and from the opinions of some owners I have had contact with . Anybody seen a Buchon flying in original Spanish colours ? Why not ?
Anyway ..... as you can guess I am more interested in the historical side of warbirds .. history is forever .. an airshow is fleeting.
