From what I've seen of other aircraft used in the training role in Florida during WWII, it would probably most resemble the first photo, with the addition of a 3 or 4 digit training number painted on the fuesalage.
I don't have any photos from Bartow, but this is the case in the photos I have from MacDill and Dale Mabry. I'm attaching a picture from Sarasota of a P-51D that shows the training numbers. They would have been painted in white over olive drab on the P-51B/C.
: Hi Karen-
:
: First of all, Dean's aircraft was a P-51B-1-NA, as shown b
: y the listing from Joe Baugher's site:
:
: 43-12093/12492 North American P-51B-1-NA Mustang
: c/n 102-24541/24940.
:
: By following this, we arrive at a construction number of 1
: 02-24700 for serial number 43-12252 (presuming Joe's data
: is correct, which it usually is). He listed two aircraft
: from this block as being with the 354th FG (the "Pioneer M
: ustang" group, first to be equipped with the P-51 in the E
: TO), and I found the following shots of aircraft from the
: same production block on Jim Sterling's site at www.web-birds.com:

:
: 43-12408
:
:
:
: 43-124xx (last two digits unknown)

: Profile of 43-12451

:
: So, I'd say the odds are VERY strong that the aircraft ret
: ained its original OD over NG paint scheme. I'm trying to
: find an accounting of Mustangs assigned to the 354th to s
: ee if 312252 was ever assigned to the group. In the inter
: im, this is at least one of your questions answered... :)
