I asked my friend where it was roughly, but he can't remember. He did say that there were bullet holes in the nose but they were "inside out"??!
He assures me it is not a wind up.The Blenheim I now have a position for, it is 60 miles NE of Kufra and 80 miles S of Jebel Saada, at a position roughly 25 00 N 24 01 E.
I ve not checked on a map yet to see if the instructions tally, but that is how they were given to me.The position seems pretty accurate for near the Egyptian border.
For finding AN529, the aicraft was bombing a target in Libya and operating from Egypt. As it ran out of fuel, it makes sense to assume it was heading either straight for its base or the nearest friendly landing ground. By following these two probable routes it might not be too difficult to find.
I know from reading it was about half an hour from a friendly airstrip, so if we halve a B-17C's most economical cruise speed we get ho far it is from the strip.
The last question is how do you get out to Libya nowadays?
Regards,
Richard.
P.S Can anyone tell me how to post photos?
