The problem with chosing another example of noseart is simply the reason behind it. If Collings foundation chooses to make a change in artwork of it's own accord; great! They have that right. If on the other hand it's done to please me, you or anyone else who believes that simply because they whine they should get thier way, then I think it's dead wrong to make the change. I've heard arguments that these things shouldn't be flying cause it glorifies war. And if the goal is to offend no one, then we should ground them all permanantly. Perhaps they should all be scrapped for the same reason.
The simple fact is that there are people who will be offended no matter what is done. Get used to it.
The Dragon is one of the most spectacular examples of nose art to come out of WW II. To remove it from the aircraft because some people are too embarrassed by it is simply silly. Instead of demanding we all change for them, how about they do a little introspection? Maybe they should look at themselves and try to determine why thier embarasement, repulsion or whatever is so strong that the rest of us need to suffer. What right does someone, who can't deal with a topless cartoon painting which has an historic context, have to be the arbitrar of appropriate behaviour for those of us who can?
Thats the real crux of the issue. Are we to continually determine what is appropriate in all phases of life based on the lowest common denominator? That's a hell of a way to achieve greratness, ain't it?? Not only survival, but dominance by the weakest; physically, emotionally, intellectually. We may be the first species to become extinct because we committed mass suicide in the interest of fairness. Hell of a legacy.
