The Douglas A-26 Invader is a great example of metal fatigue or rather a length of time it takes for the fatique to have an effect. The A-26 was of course built during WWII. It soldiered on during Korea and was still the best interdiction aircraft available during Vietnam. Now between these conflicts the aircraft were in storage (as I understand) but by the aircraft were in service in Vietnam they were well worn. I believe it was after the second incident of wings folding off the aircraft (I blieve during level flight) that the type was grounded. Modifications were made by On Mark to repair the fatigue and the B-26K Counter Invader was born. This gives you a rough idea of the limits of aircraft due to metal fatigue.
