ON THE MOVE: US Navy Corsair Warbird hits the road in Southampton.

MOTORISTS couldn't believe their eyes as they watched this fighter plane taxi move along the roads of Southampton.

The US Navy Warbird was making its final journey on British soil to the city's docks before being shipped back to its homeland.

Towed on its undercarriage, the plane - one of only a dozen still

flying in Europe - made its way along Thomas Lewis Way through Bevois Valley, Six Dials and Ocean Village on its way to Dock Gate four.

The 1944 FG1D Corsair, which had been flown into the city from Northampton, has now been

taken to its new proud owners in Texas.

The 400mph Navy jet, used during the Second World War, had to be carefully lifted by crane over the airport's perimeter fence before the journey to the docks in the early hours of Friday morning.

It was owned by Northampton plane fanatic Paul Morgan before he died and was sold to its new American owners at a cost of $1.25m.
