This one had me confused a while back as well. The fact is the two have some common heritage. I think I got it figured out...
Model: Republic P-47D-40-RA Thunderbolt
S/N: 45-49192 (USAAF)
C/N: 399-55731
Owner: Imperial War Museum
History: P-47D-40-RA, 45-49192 (USAAF), FAP 119 (Peru AF), N47DD (by 1972), first post restoration flight circa 1973, crashed 1980/2/8, a wing from the wreckage used in completion of a P-47N fuselage [see next entry] and the other remains to Imperial War Museum (1985), restored with a wing from the Netherlands in the period of 1986 to 1988
Model: Republic P-47 Thunderbolt
C/N: N/A
C/R: G-THUN
Owner: The Fighter Collection
Codes: "No Guts No Glory", "MX X", "226671"
History: Fuselage of uncompleted P-47N (once thought to be 44-95471), airframe completed with a wing from from 45-49192 and a wing from South America (1980-1984), assumed identification (for registration) as USAAF s/n 45-49192 a P-47D-40-RA, N47DD (by 1985), first post restoration flight 1985/8, to The Fighter Collection (1986/1/22), G-THUN
Notes: The markings on this aircraft represent those 42-26771 a P-47D-25-RE flown by Lt. Col. Ben Mayo, CO of 82 Fighter Squadron.
