doesn't appear to make any reference to a 109 E-1 being flown by the RAF in either the UK or the Middle East -
only later model Es and (in the Middle East) Fs and early Gs

I suppose the only other thing is that (and Lynn can confirm or shoot this theory down) this was an E-1 which following battle damage was rebuilt as an E-4 or E-7 or whatever sub type was on the lines at the time of it's rebuild.

Perhaps the "flying in RAF hands" bit is a blind alley and just like Wk Nr 1190 and the Joburg 109E, it was just shipped off to part of the Empire for War Bond purposes following a relatively non damaging forced landing during the BoB.

No doubt time will tell!
