Question re: B&W crash footage

I'm sure some of you have also seen this footage. I was watching a television documentary a while back that showed what looked like two P-51's flying at low level (right to left) over a wooded area. A split second after the clip began, the two planes (which were flying side by side) clip each other and go spinning down into the terrain below.
It was an odd shot because the camera shot the incident from the ground, albeit from an elevated location that put it almost on the same horizontal plane as the aircraft. At first I was thinking it might be some old air race footage from the 1940's, but the terrain and the appearance of the planes didn't seem to fit that theme.
Does anyone have an idea where this most unusual footage might have been filmed?
