Sonar Locates B-29 In Lake Mead
In July 1948, a B-29 Superfortress bomber ditched in Lake Mead, near Las Vegas, Nev. The five-man crew was rescued, but the bomber sank to the bottom and its precise location remained a mystery -- until now. A search team using side-scan sonar announced last week that it has found the wreck in waters more than 250 feet deep, and divers have confirmed that it is the missing B-29. The team that found the bomber included former Army Col. Bo Gritz; his daughter Melody Gritz, a deep rescue diver; and scientist Gregg Mikolasek, who operated the sonar. The airplane belongs to the National Park Service, and no artifacts can be removed from it. The exact location is being kept a secret.
