Heinkel He-177, an aerodynamical question

Hi all,
I was looking at some photographs of the Heinkel He-177 recently. One of these shots was taken from the front of the aircraft showing the undercarriage lay out very well. What surprised me was the large wheel wells which comprise a large part of the undersurface of the wings as well and even almost touch the leading edge.
Now I am not an expert on aerodynamics but I would think that when such an aircraft is landing with its landing gear down, the large wheel wells generate a lot of drag as well as loosing a lot of lift with those great gaps under the wings.
Can anyone of you knowledgable people shine a light on this?
Christer perhaps?
Cheers
Cees
