Jim, hope I'm not too late with this info. We've got a number of old USAAF and RAF bases close to where I live, and so I'll try to summarise their current status:
Alconbury (USAAF) - currently occupied by USAF, security understandably tight and so probably not accessible. Not a flying station, but they have a nice F5 replica posed outside the gate.
Molesworth (USAAF) - again, currently occupied by USAF, probably not accessible.
Glatton (USAAF) - now known as Peterborough Conington. Main runway still exists, used by local flying club.
Polebrook (USAAF) - part of main runway still exists, and has a memorial and book of rememberance.
Thurleigh (USAAF) - memorial just to north of Thurleigh village, south of airfield. Airfield now used for corporate car racing.
Wyton (RAF) - Still occupied by RAF, inaccessible. Canberra gate guardian, and Cambridge University Air Squadron fly Grob Tutors out of there.
Brampton (RAF) - strictly speaking never a flying station, but occupied by RAF and has a Phantom gate guardian.
Little Staughton (RAF) - now an industrial estate, but runway and some airfield buildings still exist with limited private flying.
Warboys (RAF) - Also now an industrial estate.
Bourn (RAF) - partly industrial, but runway still in use and occupied by Rural Flying Club.
Oakington (RAF) - now an infamous asylum seekers reception centre. Not accessible.
Duxford (RAF / USAAF) - Mecca for any warbird enthusiast. Must be top of your list for a visit.
This is from memory, so apologies if I've missed anything. Hope it helps!
Steve
