I tend to disbelieve the York wings story .....
PA474 was probably a low hours aeroplane prior to becoming what is now the BBMF Lancaster. IIRC, after being retired from RAF service (mostly doing photo survey work, IIRC), I think it went into storage for some time. Then it was pulled out and became a Ministry of Supply research aircraft (a 'trials hack') flying mostly from Cranfield: trials aircraft invariably clock up relatively few hours. It was when this ended (early 60s) that it was handed back (given?) to the RAF. I wouldn't be surprised if the BBMF-accumulated hours were greater than pre-BBMF hours.
