I wonder if this has something to do with the plans by the Dutch Aviodome, who claimed some years ago to have found a P-40 underwater in PNG. I have seen a photograph showing the curator with an inspection hatch as well as a very blurry green underwater shot showing part of a fin.

Nothing has been heard since, also probably because of the political situation there.

Nut then agains it could be two different airframes.
