Stuart,
Music to my (our) ears, keep on ranting!
What's the use to let historic aircraft (or ships etc) corrode away as a memorial. This is just short term thinking and only brought about because of MONEY!!!!! A historc artifact like this when properly restored can serve their purpose for hundreds of years later, instead of corroding into the earth.
Suppose the Fairey Battle salvaged from Iceland wasn't then, it would have lain in an isolated environment instead of thousands of people being able to see it restored to its former glory at the RAFM.
Just as the recent case of a B-17 in a lake which was denied permission to recover it because it was a monument. Who wants to sit in a boat staring at the murky water of some arctic lake hoping to see a wreck.
It's just the cheapest solution available I guess.
Cees
