Steam catapult trial airframes

Hi all,
Yesterday I saw an documentary on the development of the carrier. It showed footage of tests with the then new steam catapult. Being a British invention redundant airframes without outer wings were shown being catapulted into the sea. The airframes looked like late mark Seafires (47's?).
Question:
Where did these trials take place and what happened to the airframes, were they left or recovered?
