P-51 Mustang wing thickness myth?

Hi all,
I have been reading the book about the designer of the Mustang, Edgar Schmued and the development of this great fighter.
What I cannot seem to find is that the thickness of the wings of the D-version were made fatter to be able to mount the six .50's upricht as opposed to them being mounted on their sides in the B-version.
In several publications I have read this story that the thickness was altered, giving the pressure of war this doesn't seem to make sense. Apart from that the D-prototype was a converted B and nowhere can I find that these wings were also altered apart from increasing the leading edge kink near the fuselage.
Are we talking another myth here?
