P-47 and P-38 serial nos

Hi everyone

A diver friend of mine has found a P-47 and P-38 in the Pacific. We'd love to get some IDs for these a/c - can anyone suggest a point to check on the aircraft?

This is a bit of a long-shot as they are not in the best condition - the tail numbers are certainly not visible!

I am not too familiar with US aircraft - would the radio call plate be a useful start?
