I don't know the details when it comes to the engines and mounting them in a P-51 as compared to a P-82. Is it possible the engines were flight tested on a P-51 airframe?
As for the 539 mph quote it might not be too excessive. I am not a P-51 expert, but what was the flat out speeds of a stock P-51 at "sea level". Approaching 400 mph? 400 mph+? In dives they approached 500 mph. How fast was the P-82 at sealevel? 450 mph+? Now if you make an unlimited racer out of a P-82 (I am making the assumption this is the case here), you could elminiate one canopy (assuming one pilot) and cut down the other. The since the P-82 shares one wing as compared to the P-51 it would make sense this arrangement provides less resistance (less wing area) and would therefore the resistance/engine ratio would be less. Speed must be higher compared to an unlimited P-51. Just guessing though. But with two engines there is more opportunity for things to go wrong.
