Well hypothetically speaking, you'd need both for comparison.
I'm going to ask Chris Going, the curator of the air photo records at Keele University, and a remote-sensing experten, to say a few words on what you should look for when investigating. From our experience so far, you're looking for regular trench features near a railhead :) Look for rectangles of dark earth in fields where they really don't belong. An invaluable resource is www.maplink.com . It allows you to look at an aeriel photo with a map overlay. You'd be surprised at what comes up. If you're looking at a crash site, especially in areas of heather or bracken, it will show as a dark or burnt patch.
Tom is really good at this being a Nor-fork booooooy and a farm geezer, and has spotted one or 2 features, near airfields we've investigated.
