How about the end result?

I have been sitting back and watching digital photographic technology evolve. I haven't been in a hurry to get rid of my SLR. In the end I like to have a good resolution sharp print to add to my collection. It would not surprise me if the technology has developed to the point where the necessary resolution can be captured to compete with good quality film. But what about the printers. Are there decent affordable printers on the market that allow you to make that print? Is the alernative to put the picture on the CD and give to print shop. What is the cost of making a print this way?
