Many (and I mean, many) years ago, an American aviation magazine (possibly Air Classics, but not sure) published an article titled "Atomic Mustangs" and described the tests and the visit to the site, many years later.
Reportedly, if I recall correctly, were many Mustangs there, but most had been crushed by the expansive wave from the blast, and those closest to ground zero were heavily contaminated. The tests done allowed them to retrieve some of the Mustangs that were located far from the detonation site, and eventually sold and restored in the USA and elsewhere.
But yes, there were many aircraft left there, preserved by the weather conditions prevailing, but contaminated with radiation.
