Just a note of caution for your friend with the 4WD - Maralinga was part of the vast Woomera test range ( offcially it extends as far as Ceylon ! )that has been used for air-carried weapons R&D for 60 years. There is a significant risk of UXBs and the local federales get very tense if people wander into town asking where the range is and what might be out there.
Unless he wants to develop a close and personal relationship with the local plod, some circumspection is advised.
Also, I'm not sure if you realise the size of the place - think of searching Northern France, Belgium and Holland and you will cover the area referred to as " local " on the range. Having said that, it's a magnificent area to visit (with or without live ordnance).
