Unless you are staying in London proper, I would rent a car. Especially if you plan to do most of your visiting to places off the beaten path (like Duxford). Duxford is very easy to find. Buy the road atlas at the rental agency!
Like any big city, it is a hassle to park in London , and the traffic can be unbearable. In London, you will waste less time in a taxi because the taxi driver won't be lost half of the time...few of the streets are parallel and pependicular to each other like in most of the US. I normally drive to London, park, and take the bus or a taxi. There are plenty of narrated tour buses downtown that allow you to get off at multiple stops so you can do a walking tour at your leisure.
I really like driving the UK (outside of London), it is very relaxing- lots of scenic farmland and cute villages. Don't expect to get anywhere quickly though, unless your departure point and destination are right off the motorway.
To further qualify what I've said above, I am a "do-it-yourselfer". I don't care much for public transportation and enjoy road trips. I also enjoy obscure museums (anything to do with airplanes or cars according to my wife) out in the boondocks. That is the polar opposite of what my wife prefers!
Your mileage may vary (and fuel is expensive!).
