Incredible the things you can learn each and every day !
I wonder if this could be the Lanc that might possibly be still flying in Russia, or one of the independent states ?
Or is it the one in the technical school at Riga?
Is that Riga in Latvia ,or is there another Riga in Russia?
Or.....could there be two of them still in Russia ...or what used to be Russia ?
Intriguing isn't it ??????
Tirpitz raid Lancasters deployed to Yagodnik and/or Vaenga airfields near Archangel on 12th September 44 for the operation on 15th Sept and which crashed :-
9 SQN :-
LL884 WS-H ; crashed in N.Russia 12.9.44.
NF938 WS-H ; crash-landed N.Russia 12.9.44.
NF985 WS-? ; crashed while over-shooting airfield N.Russia 12.9.44.
PD211 WS-M ; crashed on arrival Vaenga 12.9.44.
617 SQN :-
EE131 KC-B ; crash-landed Russia 12.9.44.
ME559 KC-Y ; crash-landed Russia 11.9.44.
PB416 KC-V; missing in transit from Russia 17.9.44.
NF920 KC-E ,crash-landed at Porjius, Sweden on the second Tirpitz raid of 29.10.44.
LM448 WS-M ,of 9 Sqn crash-landed in Sweden on the third Tirpitz raid of 12.11.44.
According to Harry Holmes, ME559 was indeed 01 in Russian service, but the serial of 02 is not yet known.
NF938 WS-H is the 9 Sqn Lanc which crash-landed in the Russian bog near Talagi, ten miles from Yagodnik, on 12.9.44, pictured in Lancaster at War Vol 1.
Harry Holmes says it came down on 18.9.44 though ????
As usual there is some confusion over dates etc.
According to the Harry Holmes book, WS-H in that bog was LL884.....and both are listed as WS-H......one of them must have been H bar or H 2.....but not the one in the bog because it isn't like that in the photo!!!!!!???????
Serials Serials !!!!!
Cheers
