Hi Richard,
I can imagine that a Lanc would be easy to ditch but only in broad daylight! This aircraft didn't return from a raid on Bochum and was on the way back when it was shot down.
Apparently It tried to ditch but flipped over on hitting the water surface. The nose is pretty well smashed, and divers confirmed that the throttle levers (of which we recoverd one) were sticking out of the sand as well as part of the pilot's seat). Some years ago we lifted the port inner engine and prop which we restored.
We know that three of the crew are still missing (those who were positioned in the aft fuselage) so the main objective is to establish how deeply the rest of the fuselage is buried in sand as well as to make photo's using an underwater camera.
The rest of the story? Well, try to persuade another local mayor to give money for it's recovery. Same old story as always.
Cees
