The latest rates I have from Key Publishing (FlyPast, Air Enthusiast, Air International) are ?50 per 1000 words, based on the number of words published. That is, if they edit away half of your article, you're paid for the fraction used. There is no payment for captions. Photos inside the magazine are nominally ?20 each, but the maximum per page is ?80. In practice, all this works out to around $100US per printed page.

I can't find the guidelines for Aeroplane Monthly at the moment (insert sound of rustling papers here), but I think their pay is similar. If they have an edge over Key, it's that Michael Oakey and co. are the nicest, most polite people in the magazine business. The complete opposite of, say, Michael O'Leary....

In the US, Flight Journal promises $600 for an article of 2500-3000 words. But they've never responded to anything I've sent them. Good luck. Challenge Publications (Warbirds, Air Classics) will also fail to acknowledge you or send payment; the difference is, they will print what you send them. On principle, I would never, ever deal with Challenge. (Which means one less competitor for those of you with lower standards....)

Finally, as Airic and Mikael indicated, one should view getting published as a way to share your interests or to support musuems and airshows. The pay will never be more than a small subsidy towards your hobby.
