I've got the same experience as you Eric. You're not paid very much by the magazines in comparison to the time you spend writting the articles, visiting museums/air shows, doing research etc but on the other hand a letter of recommendation from the magazine open doors which are otherwise closed. A couple of weekends ago I got access to the Spanish Eurofighter prototype and the productionlines at EADS CASA, I were given presentations by up to 10 people from CASA and had a 4 cours lunch in their VIP restaurant. In return I write a few articles and get a monetary "contribution" from the publishing magazine to cover expenses of film, development and traveling. I'll never get rich doing this but it gets me experiences I'd probably never would have done without the articles.
Also the museums/organizations are very interested in media exposition so if I can help them with that in return for their hospitality that's ok with me.
