Low Pass a Bit Too Low: Visitors Burned
Viggen Scorches Half A Dozen at Air Base
The pilot knew the Swedish visitors, an AP report says.
One Italian man and six Swedes, three men and three women, all in their twenties, were injured Thursday when a Swedish Air Force Viggen made a low pass, presumably to say, "hello." It was too low.
Three of the spectators were badly burned; another, one of the women, was thrown to the ground by the blast, and received serious trauma injuries. Hers are the most-serious of all the injuries. The others were injured slightly. All the visitors, save one, ended up on the ground. They had been standing off the side of the runway -- fifty yards off the runway, according to an Air Force spokesman.
The incident was reported to have taken place at Uppsala, 40 miles north of Stockholm. Reports of the altitude of the pass range from ten to 20 yards.
Just why the flight happened the way it did is still a topic of speculation; and the Swedish press is speculating like crazy. The Air Force hasn't talked in detail, yet.
