Hi,

In a perfect world, there would be one, restored, replaced or replicated aircraft for each plane that flew during the war.

My feeling is that the % of original plane doesn't matter as much as the end result. The problem there, however, is a matter of money. There are, and will only ever be, 15,000 serial numbers for Mustangs, there will come a day when all those serial numbers are gone. When that happens, you will really start to see the fur fly, because the existing planes will be even more valuable!

If someone were to build a "new" P-51B Mustang around the rudder pedal from Dean's plane what would that plane be? I think it would be a reproduction, with history. We are in a unique situation concerning Dean's plane. Although, to the best of our knowledge, the data plate doesn't exist.... we know for certain that it was Dean's plane that came out of Lake Louisa last summer. If someone chose to build a replica of the plane, and then someone else came forth and said they wanted to build a replica of it, then we would have a problem, but since we don't know any millionaires looking to build a P-51, we are pretty much insulated from this aspect of it!

As has been repeated several times, the most important thing is honesty, and a bit of common sense. As has also been stated, no matter how well preserved a 60 year old plane is, if it is to fly it will need to parts.

This has been a great discussion.....It is these kind of discussions when I really miss Mick. He certainly had great sentiments on this subject......
