Howard Hughes was preparing the aircraft for an attempt on the world air speed record around 46 I think, or had pulled strings to get this aircraft to have a shot at it. The Hughes Aircraft company may have had an eye to it as a second generation "H-1" researchvehicle also...In any case Hap Arnold interfered and told him that a Nazi Aircraft would never be allowed to make an attempt on the record, and this was duly captured by Al Boyd in the P-80R. I wonder how fast it could have gone...
