I remember reading a story some years ago (but, sadly, can't remember where). The time was late 1940s or early 50s, and it concerned a RAF pilot who was sent on a night interception to take a look at an unidentified aircraft being tracked over the English Channel by UK air defence radar. What did he find? A Lancaster, without lights, roaring along through the night. It was known not to be a RAF aircraft, so the conclusion was that it was Russian !
