The L-4's were fitted with bazooka's under each wing. They were used to knock out German tanks. I have a picture of one, if anyone is interested. A Major with the 4th Armored division, liked the idea so much, he outfitted his Cub with six rockets attached to the struts of his plane. He is credited with destroying five German tanks. He also routinely attacked entrenched enemy infantry.

L-4's were also fitted with skis and pontoons, and launched from a cable known as the Brodie device. L-4's were used at Normandy, and the Battle of the Bulge, and extensively in the Pacific.

Also, as long as I am at it, the very first American plane to be hit by the Japanese on December 7, 1941, was a Cub parked at Diamond Head.

At one of his USO shows, Bob Hope quipped that an L-4 was a P-51 that didn't eat it's Wheaties! I think that sums it up rather well.....
