I think this is how it goes...

The P-40 series is simply the Hawk, as are all prior fighters from Curtiss. The P6-E, P1-B and P-36A, P-37 and P-42 are all also called "Hawk Fighters" and the name does not delineate a specific type like RAF names. This was probably Curtiss marketing here...

The P-40A thru E were called "Hawks"
P-40F thru R were "Warhawks"

aircraft spotters retroactivly ID all P-40's as "Warhawks"

Export Hawks recieved modified Hawk names, like Mohawk for the H75 and Tomahawk for the H81A-1. The Model 87 aircraft were Kittyhawk H87A-2 and the like with the Kittyhawk MkII being the "Warhawk" P-40F and L models.

The P-40 is a detailed aircraft from model to model with 30 different subtypes and configurations. The Detail and Scale P-40 Series clears these up, as does "The Curtiss Hawk Fighters" book which details all the Hawks...
