The answer to that is difficult to explain, but I will try. I have only been able to confirm this for late airframes and as not enough proof for early N models I cannot state 100% that this is correct for early N models. Firstly there are clues on the aircraft status cards that show the RAAF aircraft as being renumbered RAAF no. On its own not much but is only evident on P-40N cards. Also I have some shipping documents that show that the aircraft had a A29 serial number already applied to the aircraft before they left the US. When they arrived in Aust they were remarked to the correct serial number (as per the aircraft cards). As I state I have been only bale to work this on the Last airframes delieverd (N-20-N-40 aircraft).

Hoping to be able to find more proof later for the early ones. Intretsing enough if you start at A19-1000 for the first N-1 Model the RAAF recieved and track it via US serial Not RAAF serials, A29-405 comes to A29-1068 and A29-448 comes out at A29-1050
