I have often wondered about this. With the proliferation of CAD/CAM systems why wouldn't it be possible to build a Merlin or Daimler-Benz engine from scratch. I think the biggest problem would be startup costs. As for markets, if new engines, especialy inline engines, appeared on the market, not only would more warbirds be flying but replicas would boom. I would love to see accurate replicas of a Stuka or a Bf 110 flying.

Also, with them being made from scratch, couldn't they be built with more modern materials. This would hopefully overcome some safety issues and allow more readily available fuels to be used.
