Hi Bill-
I just wanted to throw my 20 lire in and tell you what an inspiration your facility has been to me for many, many years...I've had the good fortune to meet and chat with Tom Dietz and got a bit of a tour from Will Lee the last time I was there in 95. Every person I've met there has been absolutely wonderful, and completely committed to the idea of preserving aviation history as a whole...not just one particular facet. NASM does indeed stand as the benchmark for aviation artifact preservation, and I for one deeply appreciate the efforts of the staff. My only regret is that I'm not part of the team up there... :)
All the best,
Lynn
: Simon,
:
: Thank you for the welcome! I guess I was just a little mi
: ffed to say the least when I read post from people that do
: n't know of what they speak. The intentions of Mr Steven
: Udvar-Hazy when he made his large donation were for the co
: nstruction of a new facility to house our magnificent coll
: ection which by the way is one of the best things that cou
: ld be accomplished for this collection. Adequate temperatu
: re and humidity control will do more to increase the longe
: vity of all the myriad of materials that were used in the
: construction of these historic objects. This includes alum
: inium, bakelite, phenolic, fabric, plexiglass and so on.
: By the way our focus here at Garber is wherever possible w
: e will strive to preserve or conserve original materials a
: s opposed to all out restoration. The Caudron G-4 we compl
: eted in the last two months is a perfect example of this p
: hilosophy. If we did not take this approach we would not b
: e doing a service to the original designers and builders o
: f these aircraft. Let it be known that if the object needs
: a full blown restoration it will be done.
