Bear in mind Germany's desperate need for raw materials later in the water. Anything useful for building aircraft and other weapons was gathered up and sent to scrap depots for processing. This is one of the reasons the Allies switched to paper tanks--to stop giving the Germans free raw materials.

There were special German units who had the job of going around and collecting aircraft wreckage and other bits like drop tanks.
