As a young lad in the 50's I was taught in the Beaufighter cockpit classroom at RAF Halton, now Tim Moore's Beau. Even then it had four blade props. fitted & the engines were probably Hercules 100's. The bearers were modified to accept them. The later engines have single induction pipes, the earlier have dual. Length of the engine is not the major problem but the large sump, magneto's & fuel pump preclude the use of the early bearer. Also as somebody mentioned the later engines pick up on six points on the mount ring as opposed to four.
