Hi everyone. Just to report that the recovery was very successful and we got lots of the remaining small parts at the site. We didn't clear it as that's just bad form! There are still many small parts for walkers to puzzle over.
The more interesting parts we brought down for the Whitley Project were:
an oil cooler (still with the manufacturers plate - dated 1940), a glycol header tank (also stamped 1940), a complete plessy vacuum pump (also still with the plate on it!), an intact nacelle panel painted black with the aircrafts' serial and 'stbd' printed on it, a seat base, an early exhaust stub, several bits of canopy and lots of brackets, castings and joints which will all be extremely useful.
We were also filmed by a broadcaster as a pilot programme for something at bit juicier. Big thanks to all who came along - old and new faces. Next recovery will be in June hopefully - more news as it comes in!
Oh and hi to Gerald the German Leopard I tank gunner I met in Inverness - he tells me their estimated survival time on the modern battlefield in their state-of-the-art MBT is 15 seconds! I'll take my chances in the Whitley thanks!
