Condor, an enlarged Eagel
Buzzard, ancestor of the Griffon
Goshawk, a late development of the Kestrel with evaporative cooling

There were exceptions however:

Exe, not a bird of prey I guess but, an aircooled sleeve valve engine with 24 cylinders, 4 rows in X-layout.
It was installed in a Fairey Battle for flight testing but, it was abandoned at the outbreak of war to concentrate on the Merlin. The Battle was used as a communication aircraft during the war.

Pennine, an enlarged development of the Exe and still not a bird of prey, I think. Testbed run early in 1945 and then abandoned.

Crecy, to my knowledge not a bird of prey. Dr SG Hooker described the 4-stroke engine as having one stroke to produce power and three to wear it out. Therefore a 26 litres, 12 cylinder, 90 degree V, sleeve valve, TWO-STROKE engine was designed. The original project was for a diesel but, in 1939 it was reverted to petrol and in 1945 it was abandoned.
(I would have "enjoyed" hearing that at full throttle, at least at a distance!)

Now, You?ll have to excuse my ignorance but,

isn?t Exe a river?

isn?t Pennine a mountain ridge somewhere and a ridge without a river isn?t a real ridge?

isn?t Cr?cy a location in France where the british and the french had an "argumentation" in the 14th century and there must be a river somewhere nearby?
