The IJsselmeer (the former Zuyderzee) used to be an open connection with the North Sea through the Waddenzee.

In 1932 they completed the Afsluitdijk which blocked off the now newly named IJsselmeer from the salt water. There are sluices (don't know about the spelling) which enables shipping to pass through and reach the (salt) Waddenzee and vice versa. As a result of this the water in the Northern area is a mixture of mostly fresh and to a lesser extent salt water. The majority of the IJsselmeer is fresh water and my expieriences are that the preservation can be excellent.

Look at our site for some photo's of the investigation of Lancaster DV286 and you see what I mean.
