When I first heard about the new restoration approach I wondered if it was being done this way as a cost-saving measure. They received a large multi-million dollar donation a few years ago, so I cannot see they would do that. The approach at NASM seems to be to "preserve" and not "restore" the aircraft. If they cannot do the work, I would suggest that they farm it out to independent restorers who might volunteer their time and who are doing amazing work now. I would like to see the same level of attention given to the current projects that was given to the Fw190 F-8. Some of these captured aircraft were not very well cared for after the AAF was done with them, so I would rather not see the wear-and-tear, inaccurate paintjobs, and "hangar rash" not accumulated in actual military service preserved.
