Whirlwind.. Oh dear....Magnesium alert!

"The P.9 (Westland's designation for the Whirlwind before it was so named) represented a complete break from orthodox design and its novel features included a MAGNESIUM monocoque fuselage...."

Still the frame was aluminium alloy main members stiffened by vertical and horizontal formers and transverse frames. Only the stressed skin appears magnesium....

Also nose was aluminium, and the part of the tailcone was made of wood..

All the above from Air Enthusiast No.99 May/June 2002
