Thanks for the feedback to date - here are the ideas that we've come up with so far. Any more?

- freely accessible
- requires registration usercode/password to setup a project
- registered users can
- create project diary with updates and pictures
- create photo albums with descriptions
- post technical articles on processes and ideas
- create and maintain a wish list for parts and volunteers
- create and maintain a "for trade" list of surplus parts (and surplus volunteers? *grin*)
- register to be automatically notified when specific items appear on other peoples "surplus lists"
- identify milestones and progress timelines
- nominate restrictions on images posted for media etc.
- issue press releases
- specifiy whether they want to have their contact details made available, or if they want to have volunteers contact them.
- recommended subcontractors? (not sure on this one - could get very political)

- anyone else (Joe and Jenny Public) can
- view the sites
- search for text
- register to be automitically notified when a project update is posted
- search for matches to their specific skill sets for volunteering
- search for projects within their local area
- send a message to a project owner (there will be no email addresses on site to avoid spamming the contributors)

The system can look after all the BS - page presentation, html, notifications, searches, image resizing, thumbnail creation, blah, blah, blah.

The idea is to not to keep people away from their projects, in fact quite the opposite. The less people have to wrestle with webpages, the better, and a "one stop shop" that would allow people to match parts/problems/skillsets to each other, could be a Very Good Thing?

How about www.whenitsfinished.com? *grin*
