This promising note appears on the Commerce Business Daily website:
"DESC:, Qty 1 EA, Delivery FOB Origin--The Naval Inventory Control Point
(NAVICP) Philadelphia is proposing to acquire a Brewster Buffalo (F2A-1) on
behalf of the National Museum of Naval Aviation (NMNA) through the Navy's
museum exchange program. In exchange, the NAVICP will trade three (3)
stricken P3 aircraft currently located at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in
Tucson, Az. The exchange will proceed on or after 06 Dec 2001."
I called the contract officer in Philadelphia this morning, and he
confirmed that the Buffalo in question is BW-372, recovered from a lake in
Russian Karelia in September 1998. As far as he knows, the plane is still
in Ireland, and it still belongs to the Millennium corporation, meaning the
Irish banker and entrepreneur Michael Ryan who emerged as the plane's owner
soon after it was spirited out of Russia. "There are issues to be worked
through," the contract officer said--very tactfully, I thought. So it's not
a done deal, though it seems to be a promising one.
