Simon - I think you have to bear in mind that to some extent the age of a part is irrelevant. That may sound stupid, but when an aircraft is certified for airworthiness it has to pass the same (and often more stringent) tests for certification as an aircraft that is brand new - in other words all the bits and pieces have to be ndt tested etc etc - you know what I am getting at.
Just think of all the Merlin engines and how old they are. There has been much debate about NEW Merlins but I doubt it will ever happen - far too expensive.
I don't want to bore with my own views, but I think the first para of this post is relevant. If anything warbirds are maintained to higher standards than more modern aircraft!
I cannot think of any warbird accidents where structural failure has been the cause.
