Typhoon IB, serial R8876, 56 SQN US-M was flown by Squadron Leader Anthony (Tony) Johnston crashed on January 13th 1943 near Haarlem after having been hit by FLAK near Scheveningen.

The a/c was hit just after the cockpit and the pilot when realising that he couldn't make it back to base decided to leave the aircraft. This wasn't without difficulty because his foot was caught inside the cockpit but he managed to get out safely. One report mentions that the ground was litterd with aircraft wreckage, which was at first identified as being from a Hurricane. The Typhoon wasn't known yet.

After a few hours the pilot was found and captured.
