Dave,
You are correct in that there was a very noticable atmosphere of the avaiation archaelogists to have it dug up as soon as possible as compared to the "proper" archaeologists who wanted it dug up with a spoon and toothbrush.
A .50 machine gun was found with a round inside but there was an RAF team on site as well. But they were the once to explode all the rounds, scattering them over the field.
